Data Day!

In math this week, the students have been working to collect, organize and display data. Yesterday we measured how far each class member could jump! We found the minimum, maximum, mode and median for our data. We certainly have some future long jump athletes in our class!

Writing Celebration

The Friday before we started our April break, our 2nd grade authors had a writing celebration! The students worked very hard on their individuals that make a difference reports, complete with portraits. They are on display outside the classroom in the hallway, please come check them out!

Amy Ludwig Vanderwater

This week, the second grade was lucky enough to have a guest author/teacher working with our students.

Amy Ludwig Vanderwater is a published poet and helped us celebrate national poetry month by getting us inspired in our writing!

She taught us to think about the following questions when we write...
1. What did your body do?

2. What were you thinking and feeling?

3. What did you say? What did others say?

4. What did you see? What did things look like?

Extra Recess

The students have been working hard to earn an extra recess by filling up a container with pom poms. What a perfect day it was yesterday to meet their goal and have the playground to themselves!

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins

This week we started our measurement unit in math. We read the book Actual Size by Steve Jenkins which showed us some truly incredible animals that were extraordinarily large or small. The students worked together to measure out lengths of string the same size as the animals so we could so how big they were compared to ourselves. The animal string lengths are labeled and hanging in the hallway :)

Perimeter

To continue our study of measurement, the class investigated perimeter yesterday. They learned that perimeter is the measurement around the outside edge of a shape. They used different measurement tools such as rulers, meter sticks, yard sticks and measuring tapes to measure the perimeters of different shapes taped around the room. The students began to realize some measuring tools work better for smaller shapes and others for larger shapes!

How Big is a Foot? By Henry and Owen L.

This week we read How Big is a Foot by Rolf Myller and we did an activity where we measured each other and other things.
