4 Winds Field Trip Tuesday!

Getting ready for the STEM lab...

Our class starts our first STEM session the week after next. We started to talk about what plants need to grow and looked at bulbs and beans. We are going to be forcing bulbs indoors and observing what they do and if they have the right conditions to grow!

Math Menu

Last week, our class launched our first Math Menu. The students had a choice in a number of place value games and activities while classroom teachers and specialists supported their learning. Small groups were also pulled aside for individualized instruction. The class really enjoyed themselves and did a great job managing their time and staying focused! Ask your child what their favorite math menu activity was so far. 🎲😀

GEMS Celebration 🎉

Last week, the students filled up their GEM box and choose to have an extra recess celebration! The class worked hard the first few weeks of school on being respectful, responsible and safe! It was the perfect weather and they truly earned it and enjoyed themselves. ☀️
They are already working hard to fill our box again! Ask your child what it means to them to be respectful, responsible and safe at our school.

Picture Day Class Photo 😎

We took a quick class photo before heading to the library for picture day. Everyone was dressed their best!

Check it out circle

On Tuesday morning, our class participated in a "check it out circle." Each student selected a book from our library that looked interesting, and silently explored it for one minute. They then passed the books in a clockwise direction until their original book returned to them. The students were surprised by the variety of choices that they enjoyed and learned that it is important to read many different types of text.

Rolling for 100

This past week, the students learned a math game called "Rolling for 100." This game uses base 10 blocks, place value mats and dice. The students worked in partners to roll the dice, collect that number of ones and trade for tens when they needed to. Their goal was to get to 100! They also got the chance to practice their 10 partners, saying how many more ones they needed until their next ten.

School Pictures

Picture Day for 2nd grade is Thursday, September 15th, 2016 (AFTER RECESS)

Number Corner

In number corner this month, our class is starting to see a pattern on our calendar with the number 20, and how to make number bonds that are equal to 20. We are also collecting 60 minutes a day on the clock, learning about a.m./p.m. and how the hands on an analog clock move. Lastly, we are exploring odd and even numbers through collecting a square a day and determining if we can split them into two equal groups. Ask your student about what's new on the calendar this week!

Hopes and Dreams

The past couple of weeks, our class has been working on getting to know each other and building our classroom community. We shared our hopes and dreams and are proudly displaying them in our classroom as a reminder to work hard and practice these goals all year. Ask your child what their hope for second grade is and their dream for life!
