Renaming Subtraction

Today, the students practiced and presented their learning around a new subtraction strategy they are learning, called "renaming". It is very similar to the traditional trading strategy, however it shows and reinforces the place value meaning behind borrowing. They are picking it up quickly and we will be learning other subtraction strategies after February break!

States of Matter

Today in the STEM lab the students visited different states of matter stations. At one of the stations they took notes about what they noticed about a raisin (solid) in ginger ale (a liquid). The students wrote very detailed scientific observations!

At another station the students applied heat energy to crayons (a solid) and had great fun with the results!

Play dough in the STEM lab!

Today was the perfect day to make play dough in the STEM lab. The students got to play with it during our inside recess since outside was FREEZING! ❄️😁

Library Read Aloud

Today Mrs. Rider read us Unicorn, He Thinks He's Pretty Great, by Bob Shea. It was a very colorful and funny story about not judging a book by its cover 😊

Last week was a busy one, check out these great moments!

Here students are taking turns reading the same book about community leaders. They stop, ask one other questions and check for understanding at the end of each page.

Miss Toof joined us in the classroom and we read Blackout by John Rocco. The students visualized what it would be like to live in an urban community with no power in the middle of the summer. We practiced our questioning skills before, during and after reading.

Snow this week was great fun at recess!

In math this week, the students played the difference game to refresh their understanding of basic subtraction and how it relates to addition. You could play at home with a deck of card and pennies!

At the computer lab our class made snow flakes on the computer by making small snips with their mouse. Some of the students were able to make very detailed designs!

At the STEM lab, the second grade students began their study of states of matter. This week they experimented with different quality play doughs, different play dough ingredients and recipes.
