Finding Perimeter - Jackson's blog post

Yesterday we did a perimeter measuring activity, there were different shapes and different sizes. We were in little groups to measure, and there were different measuring tools like:yard sticks, measuring tapes, and rulers. I was partners with Kylie and I think we did pretty good : ) Here are some pictures of us ; ) Hope you like it!

The top one is the funniest in my opinion.

Deerbrook Rec Path Landmarks

This week, the students worked hard to finalize their descriptive paragraphs about the earth landmarks they found on our hike at Deerbrook Rec Path. Our next step, was for each group to work together using the iPads to word process their paragraphs, upload their photos and decide on the design of how they would present their landmark! The students worked very hard and they came out great!

Actual Size

Yesterday, the students were read the book Actual Size by author Steve Jenkins. In this book, the students learned about very large and small animals which were illustrated in their actual size! Afterwards, we did an activity where the students compared themselves to these animals. For example, we had to see how many gorilla hands tall they were.

Deer Brook Rec Path Field Trip - Brady T and Toby's Blog Post

When we went to Deer Brook Rec. path we saw a turtle on a log in the water and a lot of birds in the trees and gliding in the air. We also saw cat tails in the water. It was a lot of fun!

Deer Brook Field Trip Reminder

Second Grade Families,

We had such a great time at our first visit to Deer Brook Rec Path! However, we were a little crunched for time. This Friday, May 6th, we will be extending our field trip time to leave at 8:30 and return at 11:00. We will be missing The Abbey lunch, so if you could send your child in with a bag lunch, we can try to have an outside picnic, weather pending!

Also, regardless of the temperature, your child needs to have long pants and long sleeves to avoid ticks. Also, we prefer your child wear hiking shoes or water proof boots. Sneakers would be okay but definitely not sandals, flip flops etc.

- Mrs. Christie

* If your child will need an Abbey bag lunch, please let us know ahead of time!

STEM last week!

Last week in the STEM lab, the students were able to explore the stream table. They observered how the current went faster in certain areas and eroded around the stream bed. They placed rocks in places to reinforce the land and to see if the water would still wash away the sand.

On Friday, the students had guest teacher Angelique Fairbrother visit GEMS to teach us about GPS. The students used GPS devices to mark and find way points on the playground. We will continue learn more about and use these devices on our Deer Brook Rec Path Field Trip!
