In 4Winds we learned about animal hearing. It was very funny. We blind folded our friends and we said there name and they had to find us and they had to also point to the person that talked.

States of Matter
We are back in the STEM lab! This time we are learning about States of Matter. This and last week we have been learning about liquids. We visited different stations to explore, talk, think and write about the various liquids and activities we saw. We are learning that there is a lot more to liquids than we originally thought!
Water droplets on wax paper.
Colored water in oil on the light table.
Exploring liquids with different thicknesses (or viscosity.)
Technology In and Out of the Classroom!
The past couple of weeks our class has been learning about surveys and graphing. The students were able to create their own survey questions, survey their class and then think about their results. Yesterday, our class then went to the Maker Lab with Mrs. Payne and Mr. Hadd and we were able to graph our results on a website called Kids Zone: Create a Graph.
The graphs are on display outside our classroom on the bulletin board.
Here is the website: https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/

Later that day, our students learned about a new app we have on our iPads called Razz Kids.
This is a reading fluency and comprehension app that gives the students books at their "just right" level. After they read and listen to a book, the app asks them comprehension questions. The students did a great job! This will now be an option during our reading workshop.

Reading Workshop
In reading workshop this month, our class is learning about the questioning strategy in their reading.
More specifically, we are learning about the Question Answer Relationship strategy. This visual helps students understand the different types of questions and how we might answer them.
I read the book, The Stranger, by Chris Van Allsburg. NONE of the students had ever read this book before! It was a very strange tale that left the students with many questions. We would often stop reading for a moment to stop, think, talk and jot something down on a post-it note. After we finished the book, the students thought about their question and whether it had been answered right there in the book, or if it was something they would have to go deeper with their thinking in their head.
Ask your child what they thought of the book!
Decomposing Strategy
This week in math, our class began to practice adding larger numbers. The students were challenged to solve a double digit addition problem on their own and completely explain their thinking using words. They did an excellent job! We learned so much from each person that presented.
The strategy we saw the most we named "decomposing."
The students practiced decomposing with a dice game today!
Keep up the great work class!
