STEM on Tuesday, October 28th.
This week in STEM we continued our study of parts of plants and flowers.
We dissected lilies and located the stigma, stamen, and petals! We tried to locate the ovary where the seeds are located, some of them were difficult to find! They were so small!
We made detailed scientific drawings and included our observations from the flower dissection!

Red Clover Nominee #2
The second Red Clover Nominee is Papa's Mechanical Fish by Candace Fleming. It was a great read aloud by Mrs. Rider in the library! The students really connected with this book because of their STEM class earlier in the day. Ask them about it! :)

Building and Renaming of Numbers Exploration!
During math today the students had a building and renaming of numbers exploration. They drew 2 or 3 cards to make 2 or 3 digit numbers on their place value mats. Then, they built the number using base ten blocks and recorded their representation in their math journal. Next, students rebuilt their number a different way, using a different combination of hundreds, tens and ones.

STEM Class
Today in the STEM lab, students built models of plants in pairs. They drafted individual designs and then made a compromise plan with their partner, including parts of both student's original ideas.
The materials were: 2 sheets of news paper, I small price of cardboard, 30 centimeters of tape, and small construction paper scraps for details.
Constraints: 30 centimeters tall and free standing
*They also had to include and label as many parts of a plant as they could!

The Digit Game
This afternoon, students played the digit game to practice their place value skills. If they created the largest number with the digit cards, that player won the round! Attached are directions if you would like to try to play at home!

Math Games
Math Games are a great way to practice new skills we are learning in class. The students have been working with place value for the first part of the year and there are a couple games that we have made so that each student has their own set to play when they have finished their math work!
In these two pictures the children are playing "Drop It." Students counted out ten Popsicle sticks and marked one side with one dot and the other side with ten dots. Students drop the sticks on the ground and count by tens and ones to figure out the total number.
Here students are working on making and solving their 100 grid puzzles!
